i just got off a phone call - hi helene!

phone blinkie

before today, i wouldn’t say i’m really one for phone calls, what could be said that couldnt be said over text?

sure, maybe over call you’ll get an immediate response to something, you’ll be a little more unfiltered, and its nice to hear someones voice, but really, those are all things i’d be able to put past me to just be a little lazier and text someone instead.

that position may have changed today.

i just got off a 4 hour and 15 minute video call with my friend helene! hi helene! i know you read these!

they might be giants, puppets

we had messaged for about an hour before the call, and i believed really that that messaging was really all i had to say but i was quite wrong, because (4 hours and 15 minutes).. i do think a perk about talking to someone face to face or voice to voice is the ability to transition into new topics, and the general flow of communication. over this ~4 hour call, we went through a variety of topics, like…

room decor & college life

for the first little while of the call, i was shown around the dorm, and we got to talk a little bit about some of the decisions of things to bring along, and what to leave behind at home. i do not believe this could be conveyed in the same way over text or over a sent video, if its over text, you leave out too many details, and if its over video, i find you have yourself on an arbitrary time constraint, and its quite easy to get distracted watching a long video.

i liked getting to know a little bit about what was brought and some of the significance it held just to be brought along in the first place.

weezer

this was a conversation we both actively added to, especially with the direction the band went after pinkerton, and some of our individual standouts and album preferences. we agreed on the band kind of slipping after pinkerton, with a few on the green album managing to hold on, but then afterwards they only had a few off each on album that id say were really worth listening to. we both agreed that pork and beans is lowkey NOT as good as people say it is, which im glad about.

relationships

we talked a lot about love interests and feelings that came with that. im not sure if this is mainly a topic id talk about to many people over messages, so it being over the phone made it much easier to talk about.

i particularly noticed during this that when i was talking, i liked being interacted with and asked questions. it made it fun to talk more in depth about experiences and how things have gone. when helene was talking, i found myself just sort of listening. listening to this gave me a lot of insight on a different perspective to dealing with love and relationships. not sure how else to put it

in general

i found we held a lot in common. i’m glad this call happened just to think about how if it hadnt, i wouldn’t have learned so much, or at least not as soon as now.

you gotta call a lot more people, even if you dont like calls. hearing someone’s voice is a lot more meaningful to me than reading their text.

call your grandma
